Apple Butter Old Fashioned

It's finally beginning to feel like Fall here in the Carolinas. And in our neck of the woods, Fall and apples go hand in hand. So we decided to up the ante and throw apple butter AND whiskey into the mix.
"Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit!" What? You were thinking it too!
This drink is easy to make and tastes so good, it could make you slap your mama.

(Word to the wise: maybe don't slap your mama and just make another cocktail instead)
Well, now that I've had my fun riddling this intro with Southern idioms, I'll stop while I'm ahead and get straight to what you came here for.

Ingredients:

Makes one serving
  • 2oz Boundary Street Bourbon, Rye or Maple
  • 2tbsp apple butter*
  • 1/4 cup apple cider**
  • 2 dashes aromatic or orange bitters
  • 1.5oz club soda or ginger beer***

Directions:
Rim half of rocks glass lip with raw sugar (use citrus juice on rim to help sugar adhere to surface). Fill glass with ice and set aside. Combine whiskey, apple butter, apple cider and bitters in a shaker pint over ice. Shake well until combined (~15-30seconds). Strain into rocks glass. Top with club soda or ginger beer. Garnish with cinnamon stick and/or apple slice.

*If you don't have homemade apple butter, the next closest thing can usually be found in the produce section of your local grocery store. I highly suggest looking for a small, local brand of apple butter over Smuckers and the like.
**You can used spiced or plain apple cider here depending on your desired flavor.
***We tried it with both club soda and ginger beer. The ginger beer adds more flavor and spice while the club soda seems to let more of the sweetness come through.
